Lessons Learned from a King:

Reflecting on the Beautiful Life and Legacy of Chadwick Boseman

Hi friends! I hope all of you are doing ok with all that is happening in this world. The latest blow being the passing of Chadwick Boseman’s beautiful soul. ๐Ÿ’”

I’m not going to lie, this loss hurt me…A LOT. This weekend I went back and forth between tears, disbelief and immense gratitude about Chadwick’s gift and his life. Not because I knew him personally, but because he had an undeniable LIGHT that transcended personal bonds. He had a deep passion for life, was deeply focused on fulfilling his purpose and through his work he brought Blackness to life in the most dignified and beautiful way on the silver screen. He inspired his people and gave us such a sense of pride about being Black in a country that doesn’t often give us much to feel proud about. Black Panther shattered box office records and expectations. It showed Hollywood and the world that a cast full of beautiful Black people could absolutely be a box office success. The way we all turned out to see Black Panther in droves in our African prints was incredibly beautiful to me. I am so grateful Chadwick got to see the impact of his work while he was living!

To learn that Chadwick was bringing all of us so much pride and joy while simultaneously fighting for his own life is as inspiring as it is devastating. Chadwick battled cancer for four years and never stopped smiling. Every clip I see of him is full of joy and laughter, and his laugh truly lit up every room! It’s quite amazing to witness, in retrospect, how one person can be dealt such a devastating blow, but chose to find his light every day in spite of it. Chadwick knew his diagnosis didn’t define him and he didn’t let it. He spent his time focused on doing what he loved, which was bringing Black stories to life for the world to experience.

Yesterday, I spent a lot of time reflecting on what I could learn from Chadwick’s legacy. I decided to record a candid video to share with all of you on what I was able to glean from his story. I hope that you are left feeling as inspired as I am to know that our circumstances do not have to define our legacy. I know that Chad is resting peacefully because his purpose is fulfilled. His spirit lives on through his work and all the lives he touched along the way. He was the perfect King T’Challa and our real life superhero! He inspired a generation and I will be forever grateful for his sacrifice and tireless effort to tell our stories. Long live the King! Wakanda forever… ๐Ÿ–ค
